News anchor, social activist and disability rights leader Bree
Walker is one of America's most instructive symbols of
self-empowerment in the face of complex challenges. Born with a
rare genetic hand and foot anomaly called ectrodactyly, a syndrome
marked by the absence of conventional fingers and toes, she has
vaulted from success as a rock-and-roll disc jockey to greater
acclaim as a television news anchor in the nation's two largest
markets. Along the way, she became the most prominent American
media celebrity with a visible physical difference, obliterating
the barriers a cosmetically-obsessed society might have been
expected to put in her way. She's won a variety of awards and
honors including Emmys and Golden Mikes, as well as the National
Courage Award and the Dole Foundation Media Awareness Award for
her work on behalf of all people with disabilities. In 1992 (as a
registered Democrat no less) she was designated one of President
George Bush's "1,000 Points of Light".
